Seahawks sign undrafted free agent who could anchor their defensive line after NFL Rookie Minicamp tryout
Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

The Seattle Seahawks are fresh off their NFL Rookie Minicamp. Their eight NFL Draft picks all looked phenomenal. Their new undrafted free agent signings made good impressions. The one question heading into the weekend was whether or not the team would sign any of the players they invited to the rookie camp for a tryout. And they did! At a very specific position the team could sorely use some added depth too.

As of Sunday May 5th, general manager John Schneider and the Seattle Seahawks had officially signed former defensive tackle from Troy, Buddha Jones. But why is that such a specific need? Didn't the team just draft a first round pick who plays on the interior defensive line? Yes, the team did just draft Byron Murphy, DL Texas in the first round, and he already looks great. However, he doesn't really specialize at the same position that Buddha Jones can for the Seahawks. And no one else on the roster does either.

Buddha Jones, DT Troy

Without diving into too much detail concerning defensive line technique, in short, Buddha Jones played most of his snaps for Troy at true nose tackle. He would line up right over the center (or just inside the shoulder of offensive guards) on more than two thirds of his snaps over the last two years, and dominated in that specific role.

He would quite often be assigned to play a "two-gap" role where he could light up run plays designed to go to either side of the center. Thanks to his incredible strength and technique, Jones would often throw around opposing centers and guards as he absolutely wrecked the middle of opposing offensive lines. Jones wasn't much of a pass rushing force due to how he was asked to play the position, anchoring the entire defensive front, but he was a force against the run. Jones missed just one tackle in his final 17 career games, stopping runs for neutral or negative plays every week. That kind of player is perfect for the Seahawks.

Buddha Jones' fit with the Seahawks defensive line

The Seahawks don't really have a true nose tackle who fits well playing two gaps on the entire roster. Jarran Reed can if he needs to, but he performs best paired up with another interior tackle working the opposite "b-gap" between the guard and tackle. Johnathan Hankins (who just signed this spring) can too, and might be best served in that role when the Seahawks want to go with an odd-front defensive line. However, he's already 32 years old and has missed at least three games in each of the last three seasons.

Buddha Jones could legitimately earn a spot as the Seahawks' primary odd-front nose tackle, or perhaps at least make the active roster as a rotational defensive lineman right away given their lack of depth in his particularly unique skill set.
