Tottenham Hotspur are expected to sign a quality central defender during the January transfer window.

The reliable Alasdair Gold from Football London has revealed that Tottenham are expected to spend the proceeds from the sale of Davinson Sanchez on a new centre-back when the transfer window reopens.

Apparently, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou wanted to bring in another defender this summer but a deal did not materialise.

“With the Sanchez they have that £12.8m to go towards a new January recruit. Let’s be honest, in January they are signing a new centre-back, they are, it’s something Postecoglou wanted this summer, it didn’t happen, it will happen in January, it kind of has to,” Gold said on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast.

Spurs signed Ashley Phillips and Mickey van de Ven earlier this summer and the Dutchman has proven to be a quality signing. The former Wolfsburg defender has formed a quality partnership with Cristian Romero. But Tottenham need to add more depth and quality to the defensive unit.

Postecoglou cannot afford to go through the whole season with just two reliable central defenders at his disposal.

In addition to that, players like Eric Dier have been linked with a move away from the club and if the England international decides to move on in January, Spurs will have to replace him adequately.

Signing another central defender should be a top priority and the revelation from Gold is hardly a surprise.

It remains to be seen whether Tottenham can bring in the necessary additions midway through the campaign. They were linked with players like Edmond Tapsoba, and Tosin Adarabioyo earlier this summer.

Adarabioyo in particular, could be available on a bargain in January. He will be out of contract next summer and Fulham will be keen to cash in on him.
